How much pain and blood comes when I take an abortion pill

The amount of bleeding depends on the gestational age at the time of taking the abortion pill (the higher the gestational age, the greater the amount of bleeding and vice versa). As for the pain, it is useful to know that the pain is affordable in most cases, and is very similar to the usual menstrual pain, and responds to the usual pain relievers such as Paracetamol (Panadol pills), ibuprofen (Brufen pills) or mefanmic acid (Ponstan pills).

Most women will start bleeding 1-4 hours after using misoprostol; however, there are individual variations.

Everyone’s body is different. On average, women bleed for 9 -14 days after doing a medical abortion. Some women bleed or pass clots for as long as 4 weeks. After the first few days of more intense bleeding some women will have little or no bleeding, some will have bleeding that stops and starts, and others will have bleeding similar to a menstrual period for several weeks.

If there are no symptoms of complications the bleeding, even if it lasts longer, is not dangerous and it is safe to wait for it to stop on its own.

You should go to the doctor or hospital if you have any of the signs of complication below:

1- Severe bleeding (more than 2 or 3 pads used every hour for more than 2 or 3 hours).

2- Severe abdominal pain that isn’t relieved with painkillers or continues for 2-3 days after taking the pills.

3- Fever over 39º or 38º  for more than 24 hours.

4- Abnormal vaginal discharge.

What kind of pain will you feel when using the abortion pill?

Women mistakenly believe that the pain that will occur after taking the abortion pill will be similar to the pain of childbirth, and this is not true.

The correct description of what a woman feels after taking the abortion pills is bouts of cramps (occurring in the lower abdomen), and these bouts of cramps are very similar to the cramps attacks that accompany the normal menstrual cycle, but they are sometimes more severe.

An attack of cramp lasts for 1 to 5 minutes, then settle down (disappear) for 5 to 20 minutes (depending on the dosage regimen), and then returns again.

The amount of pain and amount of bleeding after taking the abortion pill depends on two factors

The first factor is the gestational age – the younger the gestational age, the less pain and less bleeding, and vice versa.

The second factor is the type of abortion medication the woman is using – if you are only using the misoprostol pill (Cytotec) to terminate a pregnancy, you will likely experience intermittent episodes of pain (cramps) for long periods and the amount of bleeding will vary according to your gestational age.

But if you use misoprostol in combination with mifepristone or methotrexate, in most cases the experience will be easier, the amount of pain is less but the amount of bleeding will depend on the gestational age as well.

The use of misoprostol alone for early termination of pregnancy

The use of misoprostol pills alone to terminate pregnancy, requires taking high doses of misoprostol pills.

One attempt to terminate a pregnancy with misoprostol pills alone requires taking at least 12 pills (the dose is usually 4 pills every 3 hours – three times on the day of the attempt) – cramps is a common side of the misoprostol pills.

Therefore, the woman suffers from cramp and lower abdominal pain from the beginning of the effect of the first dose of Misoprostol pills until the end of the effect of the last dose – and the time difference between the first dose and the last dose extends over a period of about 12 hours.

The good news is that the pain associated with taking misoprostol is quite tolerable (it’s like regular period pain), and it also responds to the usual pain relievers like ketoprofen (Ketofan) or Ponstan.

The use of a combination of misoprostol with methotrexate or mifepristone

One of the most effective means of early termination of pregnancy, when the gestational age is less than 63 days (9 weeks) is to use two types of medicines in a specific order and in a carefully defined dosage regimen.

These drugs are mifepristone or methotrexate or their alternatives, and they are taken at first, and after several days the woman begins to take the misoprostol pill. In this case, the woman needs to use only 4 to 6 tablets of Misoprostol, and this means that she will not experience cramp or pain for a long time.

Mifepristone pills or its alternatives do not cause any pain. As for misoprostol pills, which are associated with cramp attacks similar to menstrual cramps, the woman takes only one small dose that causes minor pain attacks, similar to menstrual cramps, for a limited period of time, about 4 to 6 hours.
