Scopinal Tablets to relieve cramps & symptoms of IBS

Each Scopinal tablet contains 10 mg of the active ingredient hyoscine butylbromide. Scopinal belongs to a group of medicines called “antispasmodics”. Scopinal Tablets are used to relieve cramps in the muscles of your • Stomach • Gut (intestine) • Bladder and the tubes that lead to the outside of your body (urinary system). It can also be used to relieve  the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

How to take Scopinal tablets?

  • The usual dose for Adults and children over 12 years is two tablets 4 times a day.
  • For Irritable Bowel Syndrome, your doctor may give you a lower starting dose of one tablet 3 times a day. This dose may be increased, if further relief is necessary .
  • The usual dose  for Children 6 – 12 years is one tablet 3 times a day .
  • Scopinal Tablets are not recommended for children under 6 years.

General considerations regarding the dosage

  • Scopinal Tablets should not be taken continuously for long periods of time. Take your tablets with water .Do not break, crush or chew the tablets.
  • If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose.
  • Always take your medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. You should check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

When Is The Best Time To Take Scopinal Tablets? Scopinal Tablets can be taken every time you have abdominal cramps, pain and discomfort or an IBS flare up. They are gentle on the stomach which means you can take at the first signs, to avoid the pain getting worse, and even when you have a mild flare up.

How Many Tablets Should I Take? For abdominal cramps: It is recommended to take two tablets initially up to 4 times a day. For Irritable Bowel Syndrome: It is recommended to start by taking one tablet 3 times a day. If you find that more relief is needed then this can be increased to a maximum dose of two tablets 4 times a day. The dosage can be adjusted depending on whether you’re having a mild or severe flare up. This helps you take control of your IBS symptoms. Not suitable for children under 12.

Do Scopinal Tablets Become Less Effective Over Time? There is no evidence to suggest that it becomes less effective if taken regularly over long periods of time. Scopinal Tablets should not be taken on a continuous daily basis or for extended periods of time without investigating the cause of abdominal pain.

How many hours apart can I take Scopinal Tablets? The recommended dose for adults and children over 12 years of age is two tablets four times a day taken about every 4 to 6 hours.

How quickly does Scopinal Tablets work? Scopinal relieves the pain of stomach cramps by helping your gut to relax. The medicine works very quickly. Painful cramps should ease within 15 minutes. It’s unusual to have any side effects, but some people get a dry mouth, constipation and blurred vision.

Does Scopinal make you sleepy? This medicine may cause dizziness, tiredness, drowsiness in some people. If you have any of these symptoms, do not drive, operate machinery or do anything else that could be dangerous. Do not drink alcohol while taking Scopinal.
